The ICEHOUSE Society
“The ICEHOUSE Society” is a vehicle to further the reach and significance of ICEHO. Described succinctly, it is “a place” for friends of ICEHO to come together, to allow us to reach out beyond our base of member organizations to individual environmental historians (and like-minded people) to better serve this important constituency.
As an acronym, ICEHOUSE represents an amorphous group of friends of our field characterized as the
International
Consortium of
Environmental
History
Organizations’
Underwriters,
Supporters, and
Enthusiasts.
With this initiative, ICEHO is redoubling its efforts to work alongside our established member organizations to engage the global community of environmental historians and friends. We welcome contributions in the form of donations, events and any other initiatives that that help further our mission. If you would like to be listed as a part of the ICEHOUSE, contact us here after donating or in relation to an initiative you think is fitting to our cause.
The ICEHOUSE is the continuation of an original idea by former ICEHO President Graeme Wynn, who also choose a name that should resonate with environmental historians. An example of human adaptation to the environment, an icehouse is a structure in which winter ice used to be stored, before the invention of the refrigerator, to allow the chilling of food and drink during summer months. But the word also suggests an igloo, a literal ice or snow house with the opposite function of providing a warm space in an otherwise cold environment. Whether you prefer heat or cold, then, please endorse and support the cause by entering the Icehouse.
