Verena Winiwarter Prize
for the best article Contributing to global environmental history
ICEHO is proud to announce the Verena Winiwarter Prize for the best article that contributes to global environmental history, focusing on comparisons and connections between different parts of the world or on areas outside mainstream scholarship in the field.
The prize will be awarded every two and a half years: at the World Congress (held every five years) and once in between congresses. The first prize will be awarded in February 2027.
Eligibility:
Articles must have been published between January 2024 and June 2026.
Articles will be accepted in English, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese, German, Russian, Korean, French and Turkish, but consideration by the committee will depend on the capacity to read them.
Submissions should include:
The article.
A letter in English that highlights the contribution to global environmental history through comparisons or connections, or through the examination of a region outside mainstream scholarship in the field.
An extended abstract of around 500 words in English.

Prize: $250
If the winning article is not in English, and if copyright status allows for it, it will be translated and published in English in Global Environment.
Prize committee
The committee will have three members, who may request assistance from other scholars regarding language, if needed.
